Voltera and Revel Bet Big on Robotaxi Charging

Two charging firms have decided that the future of urban electric mobility is worth merging for. Voltera and Revel agreed to combine their charging businesses, creating a network of more than 1,000 stalls across 11 American cities under the Voltera brand. Revel chief executive Frank Reig will lead the combined company. The logic is simple: ride-hail fleets and the robotaxis expected to follow them need charging infrastructure that today's scattered public network cannot reliably provide

Each partner brings something the other lacks. Revel has spent the past year building fast-charging hubs in New York, where demand from rideshare drivers regularly outstrips supply. Voltera, by contrast, has focused on real estate and infrastructure development, the slower but necessary work of actually securing sites at scale. Combining operating experience with a development pipeline is meant to solve both problems at once

Ownership tells its own story about how investors view the sector. EQT will hold majority control, while Global Infrastructure Partners, a BlackRock unit and Revel's original backer, keeps a minority stake. That a private equity firm and an infrastructure investor are jointly betting on charging hubs suggests the asset class has matured well beyond speculative technology. Robotaxis, after all, will need dedicated, high-utilization charging quite unlike anything serving today's private car owners

The merger also hints at where growth might come next. Executives mentioned fleet services, charging for ordinary vehicles, and battery storage as adjacent opportunities worth exploring. Institutional investors increasingly treat well-located, heavily used charging assets as long-duration infrastructure, the sort that pension funds favor, rather than a bet on which battery chemistry wins
